Chapter Fourteen

Alex heard the back door open and figured Baldy must be back. He'd been looking out the bathroom window, checking out the areas around the side of the house, working on an escape plan. Everything had to be planned out in his head, because he knew once the fireworks started, he'd have to grab Davey and run.

“Food's here. Come and eat.”

Great, he was starving. The bowl of cereal earlier had worn off a long time ago, but he refused to beg for something else to eat. He'd have grabbed some more of the dry cereal from the box Davey'd had earlier, but the little pig had eaten it all. Except for what he'd played with on the floor, and Alex wasn't touching that. Yuck.

“What did you bring?” Davey asked, staring into the fast food bags.

“Burgers.” Baldy said, pulling bottles of water out of the refrigerator and slamming them onto the tiny kitchen table.

“I hate hamburgers.”

“Tough. That's all you got.”

Davey fumbled in the bag, coming up with a box of chicken nuggets. “I like these.”

“Gimme that.” Mr. Evil snatched them out of his hand. “Those are mine.”

“I want chicken!” Davey's bottom lip stuck out and Alex wanted to laugh. His brother was at it again, tormenting his captors. All part of the plan to drive them crazy.

“You'll eat the burger or you'll go hungry.”

“I don't want a burger—I want chicken!” The words ended on a high pitched screech, so loud Alex wanted to cover his ears. Sheesh, his brother sure could yell loud.

“Give the kid the chicken.” Baldy laid cartons of French fries on the table.

“But they're mine. I don't want a burger.” Mr. Evil's whiny voice complained. “I told you to get fried chicken.”

“Then you should have made the food run. Shut up and give the kid the chicken.”

Still grumbling, Mr. Evil slapped the box of nuggets onto the table and picked up one of the burgers. Alex chuckled, watching Davey squirt ketchup all over his fries. He pulled two of the burgers in front of him along with some fries, too.

“What, no complaints from you?” Mr. Evil grumbled, opening his sandwich, his eyes darting once again toward Davey's nuggets.

“Did ya get any sodas?” Davey asked around a mouthful of chicken.

“No sodas. Drink your water, it's better for you.” Baldy replied before taking an enormous bite from his burger. Alex glanced toward Davey and shook his head. Don't overplay it, he thought. We don't want to make them angry, just keep them off guard.

“What's going to happen now?” Alex asked, dragging his fry through a pile of ketchup. “With us?”

“Boss called and said everything will be over in twenty-four hours. So, one more day and everybody goes home.”

Alex eyed him suspiciously. “You're really going to let us go?”

Baldy sat his burger down, and looked at Alex. “Kid, I'm gonna be straight with you. If your grandfather does exactly what the boss tells him to, you will be going home some time tomorrow.”

“And if he doesn't do whatever it is your boss wants, then what?” Alex wasn't sure he wanted to know the answer.
